PLC Programmer / Controls Engineer

Estimated Salary: $75,000 – $95,000 / year (Commensurate with experience) + Travel/Overtime Pay
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled PLC Programmer to design, develop, and implement control strategies for building automation, HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems. In this position, you will take automation solutions from initial concept all the way through commissioning.
You’ll work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering, project management, and field teams to build reliable control logic, perform system integrations, troubleshoot complex issues, and deliver high-performance automation solutions.
Compensation & Perks
Base Salary Range: $75,000 – $95,000 / year (depending on degree and platform experience)
Travel Compensation: Per diem and expense coverage for required site deployments
Overtime Pay: Additional compensation options available during on-site commissioning phases
Key Responsibilities
System Strategy & Design: Partner with design engineering teams to translate sequence of operations, P&IDs, project plans, and client requirements into robust control logic.
PLC Programming: Develop, write, and refine programs for Rockwell and Siemens PLC platforms.
Protocol Integration: Implement and configure communication protocols and networking gateways, including Modbus, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, and BACnet.
HMI & SCADA Collaboration: Work with SCADA developers to integrate user-friendly HMIs and streamline system-wide control interfaces.
Testing & Quality Assurance: Author protocols for simulations, bench testing, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
Commissioning & Support: Execute simulations, bench tests, and on-site commissioning to ensure seamless system delivery.
Travel: Up to 30% travel to customer sites for system deployment and post-deployment support.
What You Bring
Required:
Experience: 2+ years of hands-on PLC programming experience using Rockwell and/or Siemens platforms.
Domain Knowledge: Solid understanding of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Process Plant controls across varied environments.
Drawing & Blueprint Literacy: Proficient in reading electrical schematics, process control drawings, and P&IDs.
Technical Aptitude: Strong foundational understanding of mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and process systems.
Networking Skills: Practical grasp of IT networks, gateway networking, and protocols (Modbus, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, BACnet).
Self-Management: Proven ability to initiate and execute programming tasks both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Controls Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or Computer Science.
BAS Experience: Exposure to DDC, Tridium Niagara, or other commercial Building Automation Systems.
